Myles Posts New SA National Record at SA National Aquatic Championships

Myles Brown continued with his sizzling form at the 2015 South African National Championships in Durban breaking the 800 metre freestyle on Thursday.

The 22-year-old broke Troyden Prinsloo's record from 2009 by a second posting a time of  7:53.97. This comes four days after he also improved Ryk Neethling's national mark in the 400m freestyle that stood since 1999. In the process Brown also qualified in his third individual event for the FINA World Long Course Championships after he met the standard in the 200m and 400m freestyle. "I wasn’t sure that I was still within the time of the record -- it was a bit unexpected for me," Brown said. "For all the previous races getting the qualifying time on Monday really took the pressure off. I am definitely going to go out  for the 100 free but I will focus more on the 200m free as I am stronger in that event."

Olympic gold medallists Chad le Clos qualified for his second individual event in his specialist 200m butterfly in a time of 1:56.13. He was followed by Sebastien Rousseau,  who qualified for this event the day before. Rousseau posted a time of 1:57.20 with Michael Meyer  bagging the bronze in 1: 59.52. Although this launched Le Clos into the top-10 on the world rankings he was not happy with his performances at nationals. "To be honest this has been my worst SA Nationals, I really didn't do as good as I wanted to," Le Close said. "I am pleased I won, I struggled the last 50m of the race. After nationals I will train hard to get back into my form. For Kazan my focus will be 100 and 200m fly."

Meanwhile,  women's swimming ace Karin Prinsloo claimed the 200m freestyle in a time of 2:00.30 with Marlies Ross following behind her in 2:02.92, while Kirsty McLauchlan finished third with 2:04.68. Tara Nicholas won the women's 50m breastroke posting a time of 32.04 seconds. Tatjana Schoenmaker bagged the silver medal in 32.45 as Franko Jonker took third in 32.55.

Day 5 morning heats start at 09h30 and finals at 18h00.
