The newly elected CANA Bureau held its first meeting on Saturday 19 December 2020. The Bureau members considered a number of items in preparation for 2021.

President Sam Ramsamy proposed that the CANA representation to FINA should represent all the Zones of CANA. The Bureau unanimously accepted the following nominations for the FINA General Congress scheduled for 5th June 2021 in Doha, Qatar:

FINA Vice President: Dr Sam Ramsamy (South Africa)
FINA Bureau Member: Dr Mohamed Diop (Senegal)
FINA Bureau Member: Dr Donald Rukare (Uganda)
FINA Bureau Member: Mr Zouheir El Moufti (Morocco)
FINA Bureau Member (at large): Ms Doreen Tiborcz (Mauritius)

“The nomination of Ms Tibrocz for the FINA Bureau and if elected will be the first African women to represent CANA”, Dr Ramsamy said.

The Bureau re-confirmed the support of the nomination of Mr Husain Al Musallam (Kuwait) for President of FINA, as approved by the CANA General Assembly. The Bureau unanimously endorsed a request from the USA Swimming Federation to support Mr. Dale Neuburger (USA) for the position of FINA Treasurer.

Mr Hakim Boughadou (Algeria) was co-opted on the CANA Bureau as an additional member.

The current impact of COVID on the activities of CANA member federations was considered and it was agreed that the CANA Championships in 2021 will combine the Junior and Senior Championships and be held after the Tokyo Olympics.

The Bureau urged member federations to remain cautious in the coming months as a result of the increase in the global infection rates and to take all necessary measures to protect our athletes and members and to remain safe.
