10 March 2023 – Places on the team to the Swimming World Championships in Japan will be the chief target of the elite swimmers taking part in the SA Open Water Championships which get under way at Marina Martinique today and continue until Sunday.
Two-time Midmar Mile champion and last year’s SA Open Water runner-up in both the 5 and 10km races, Connor Buck, will be among the favourites in the men’s races, while two-time Olympian Michelle Weber makes a return to the 10km field after skipping the event last year.
5 March 2023 – World junior champion Pieter Coetzé showed his speedwork is well on track by recording an A qualifying time for the Swimming World Championships in the 50m backstroke on the final day of action at the Grand Prix meet in Durban on Sunday.
The 18-year-old stormed to victory in a time of 25.09 seconds and was back in the pool a little later to record a B qualifying time in the 200m backstroke, winning in 1:58.34 – just 0.27 seconds off the A qualifying mark.

4 March 2022 – Double Commonwealth Games champion Lara van Niekerk wasted no time in getting a World Championship and Olympic qualifying mark in the bag at the second Grand Prix meet of the year in Durban.
The 19-year-old from Pretoria swam 1:06.65 in the heats of the 100m breaststroke on Friday to dip under the A qualifying time for both the World Championships in Japan this July and next year’s Paris Olympics – although she’ll need to swim the time again at the SA National Championships to officially qualify.
